GTU students protest against authorities over poor results

AHMEDABAD: Third semester students of MCA stream at Gujarat Technological University ( GTU), whose exam results were declared on February 28, rampaged the GTU campus on Thursday to protest against poor results declared by the university. They shouted slogans and staged a dharna to protest the poor pass percentage.

Of the 2,500-odd students who appeared for the exams, 1,200 have failed. The students alleged that there were malpractices in paper evaluation due to which such a large number of students had failed. They said GTU should also scale down the pass percentage from 50 per cent to 40 per cent.

"Fifty per cent marks is too high for a post-graduate course in pure sciences. It should be scaled down to 40 per cent," students said.

They also said that there should be changes in the style of paper-checking as it was too harsh. Also, they demanded that the style of practical examination assessment should also be changed. "The current paper checking styles and protocols are too harsh," the students said.

Meanwhile, vice-chancellor AK Aggarwal said the students have submitted their representation to him and he is looking into the matter. "There is a re-assessment protocol in place wherein the students who have failed the exams can apply for re-checking. We will again check the papers to see if there have been large-scale irregularities in paper checking. If some teachers are found to have erred heavily, action will be taken," Aggarwal said.

He said primarily the students who have failed the exams belong to two-three colleges and there is a possibility that teaching in those colleges was poor which has manifested in a poor result.
